Sibutramine (in the form of hydrochloride monohydrate)
is a tertiary amine that develops its activity in vivo
through metabolites, primary and secondary amines.
the structure of sibutramine differs from the others
active ingredients known so far.
Sibutramine reduces body weight gain, by increasing satiety,
although increased thermogenesis probably contributes to weight loss as well,
since it attenuates the adaptive decrease in basal metabolism during weight loss
These effects have been shown to be mediated by inhibition of serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake.
Sibutramine-induced weight loss is accompanied by beneficial changes in serum lipids.
